Dear Jim and Carrie,

My name is Ladd and I have done a lot of home gardening and farming on San Juan Island. For what it's worth, I have noticed that one of the very most significant factors determining how warm a garden or farm is for growing is *how much heat-loss there is due to air movement*. The best gardens I've seen have all had the characteristic of being sheltered from the wind by trees or walls or both. Generally, a piece of farmland that is in a slight depression and is surrounded by dense forest is the best. It should also be located away from the water.
I am currently renovating a garden that became overgrown in recent years. Even though it is only about three stones throw from the water, I am told that it has been warm enough to grow cantalope quite successfully. It is situated in a meadow with very tall and densely packed trees around it and salal bushes to a height of about 5 feet. The result is that the sun shines down into such spaces during the summer, even if it is a small valley, and warms it substantially. Jim Lawrence has such a small valley (Thirsty Goose Farm here on San Juan) and you could ask him about how warm his is. I know he's grown corn (I weeded it!).
Hope this helps. Best of luck!

Cheers,

Ladd

Hi -

I can see what you mean. We are looking for a micro-climate that will provide the warmest, most sunny environment. Luckily, we are flexible in which of the three islands (Orcas, San Juan, Lopez) we are on. Like you, we also are interested in semi-tropical crops (citrus, avacados). But, we will be willing to forego these if needed and concentrate on veggies.

Any info you might have on micro- areas would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks!!!

Jim,
Tough question and not an easy one to give an absolute answer to. The problem is the many micro-climates within any particular island environment and the fact that we do have a strong rain shadow effect over the whole island chain.
What one location has for sun days will not be the same as a location on the other side of the same island, east to west or north to south.
I have never seen a listing of sun days for any of the islands so as to where to find said info. would be tough.
If it is of any help we can grow semi-tropical fruit such as fuzzy kiwi (Actinidia Deliciousa) but it takes a strong micro climate to protect them from killing winter temperatures. Protection from winter NE storms, protection from SE (typical) winter storms, location inland or near salt water all have a tremendous effect.

We need to protect our rights to continue farming in WA and the San Juans. Animal ID, and WA's new animal health laws threaten the freedoms and rights for everyone to farm and enjoy farm bounty.

As a county we must stand united against the curse of surveillance, animal ID, and intrusive government "one size fit's all" regulations. If the WSDA gets the WSF on board to prevent livestock transportation via Ferry, or is the fees and fines from their new implementation of WA Animal ID take hold most livestock producers in the Islands will be put out of business. And don't think your hay or vegetable business is free from intrusion either--the USDA wants all produce and Hay tagged and tracked to its origin.

Google "RSS" and you will find more information than you want, but the gist of using RSS is to install a RSS aggregator/reader/client on your computer and set it to check the the bulletin board feed on a regular basis to deliver new postings to your computer. RSS Readers like Browsers are generally freeware. For example I use one called Intraviews which is attached to my MS Outlook mail program and it updated feeds into folders. For example I get the NOAA weather for Friday Harbor and Dilbert each morning. I suspect we have some more techically versed members which can help with using RSS effectively.

Hi Eliza,

We had a "large project" stomwater management plan prepared for our farm project. It cost about $3,000 to prepare. This type of plan I am told can only ne prepared by a licensed engineer in Washington State. It included everything we ever thought we wpould build and added about 25% of impervious surface area for margin so wew did not have to ever hopefully update the plan as we would always have less impervious surface area than the plan calculations,,,, this margin was specifically addressed in the plan and I think is an important item to control the cost of doing these things. This plan also used portions of our wetland delineation report and covered any potential impact of our developement on an adjacent parcel's regulated wetland (which has been strongly manipulated by Humans for 100 years with channeling and flood gates and so our developement did not effect it according to the wetland specialist). The DOE also used our plan to validate certain aspects of our water rights application. The County has approved this plan for the 3 building permits granted to date, plus the 4th one for our house working its way through the planning dept. FYI, the Public Works dept charges a review fee of $150 each time you submit a plan (or the same one they have already reviewed).

Regards,

-Todd

[Farmland Preservation] Ideas for sharing information about farming in the islands

One of the things the Preservation subcommittee has identified as a priority is fostering farming in the islands. This would be a good place to give potential farmers a place to ask questions and learn about what it's like to farm here.

I think the islands are an ideal place for niche farming and organic seed growing. WSU Small Farm Team is an excellent resource for learning more about niche farming http://smallfarms.wsu.edu/index.php. The Organic Seed Alliance is good contact http://www.seedalliance.org/ to learn about seed production.

Would anyone be willing to share their produce pricing on this bulletin board? This might be a good place for farmers to share pricing strategies, ideas and actual prices.
For example, I'm thinking of selling asparagus for $4 lb. Does this seem too high? Should I go on Mt. Vernon Coop prices or ? Comments, please. Thanks. Eliza
